Helpful Options & Positive Energy 4 those affected by Multiple Sclerosis

Nutrition and Fitness

Good fitness is an important part of the overall well being of M.S. patients. Lack of exercise can increase the risk of osteoporosis and obesity. Weight bearing exercise can reduce osteoporosis. Exercise is therapeutic for spasticity. Passive stretching in yoga are used by therapists to improve body tone. Exercise has been shown to reduce fatigue, improve strength, and improve emotional health. Exercise releases hormones which increase alertness, and endorphins which help elevate mood and kill pain.

It is important for patients with M.S. to avoid over heating during exercise. This can be done with cooling strategies such as frozen towels, cooling vests and hats, and drinking ice water. Patients with M.S. should seek the advice of their health care provider to help customize an individual fitness program.

A good daily nutrition plan is important to maintain the health of people living with M.S. There is no special M.S. diet. However, a low fat, high fiber diet will help to maintain overall good quality health.
