March 3, 2007 Meeting Newsletter
Surviving Adversity was an issue we got to look at from the warm eyes of Golan.
Golan is an Anatolian Shepherd who made his way to our member Pat Urie recently. Pat brought Golan and presented us with a slide show documenting his journey from war torn Beirut all the way to Igo. Pat has a natural heart for saving & giving and when she found out about 300 pets that were rescued against all odds and brought to Best Friends in Utah she felt like this was an opportunity to do something to help with the war effort overseas. There was a bombing in Beirut causing an evacuation of the people but the animals were excluded. A group of women there combined their efforts to save these animals and contacted Best Friends looking for help. This undertaking was too huge for Best Friends but amazingly the women found someone there to donate his jet to transport the pets to New York. A cease fire was even declared long enough for this jet to depart! After customs, the animals were brought to Best Friends who took on the task of finding them homes. One look at Golan’s face & Pat knew she had to have him. Golan was an example to us all as to how we can go through tough extremes and come out on the other side. Pat was an example of how enough love & care can help someone through. Without knowing, no one would guess that Golan was blind in one eye & covered with shrapnel scars or that Pat had MS, but the unconditional love filled the room.
The drawing for the brainteaser winner was won by Jeanne Szody who won a $26 gift certificate to BackRubz. Congratulations Jeanne. The teaser was: what is this anacronym… poFISHnd…many people responded saying “fish pond” but actually it goes a little beyond that. The answer is “big fish in a small pond”.
One topic of discussion was regarding how to handle sleep deprivation and several ideas were thrown out including different medications, more exercise, sleep clinics & magnesium. I don’t think we really got that one settled so information is welcome.
We discussed the possibility of playing Bingo at a meeting and the response was positive so look for that at an upcoming meeting. It has been presented to us that maybe we should take it on ourselves as a group to advocate for more quality neurologists to serve Redding . That seems to be an ongoing issue here so let’s see what we can do. We need to write a letter and possibly we can get the Chamber of Commerce to help us put together something to entice neurologists to our beautiful town.
The first Saturday of next month is Easter weekend which is a very busy weekend at the church so we will postpone our meeting to the following Saturday, April 14th from 10-12 at Redding Christian Fellowship Church. We will reserve this meeting for a round table discussion so that each person can introduce themselves & their individual story. This always opens dialogue about different issues and always offers good personal information.
On Saturday April 28th we have been told that the MS Society will be bringing us an out of town Neurologist to speak at the Hilton Garden Inn. Watch for the flyer and we will also send you information.
I’ll see you on the 14th while Beth is still in Mexico & Robyn will be in Las Vegas.
Patricia
